About the Scheme

Launched in August 2020 (with the first train running from Devlali, Maharashtra to Danapur, Bihar), the Kisan Rail Scheme solves one of the biggest problems in Indian agriculture: the rotting of produce during transport. Operated by Indian Railways, Kisan Rail provides a seamless, high-speed national cold supply chain for perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy. It utilizes specialized, temperature-controlled coaches to ensure produce reaches distant metropolitan markets fresh. By cutting down travel time and offering massive freight subsidies, the scheme integrates rural production centers with large urban consumption markets, directly increasing the profit margins of farmers.

Benefits & Financial Assistance

The Kisan Rail Scheme provides a massive logistical and financial advantage, though it is not a direct cash transfer scheme:

  • 50% Freight Subsidy: Under the MoFPI's "Operation Greens – TOP to Total" initiative, farmers and traders receive a flat 50% subsidy on the transportation cost of notified fruits and vegetables.
  • Upfront Discount: You do not have to pay full price and wait months for a refund. The 50% subsidy is applied immediately at the time of booking at the parcel counter.
  • No Minimum Limit: Whether you want to send 50 kilograms or 50 tonnes, there is no minimum consignment limit. Even the smallest farmer can book space on a Kisan Rail.
  • Less Spoilage: Faster train speeds and refrigerated coaches mean produce arrives fresh, fetching a higher market price and eliminating post-harvest losses.

Eligibility Criteria

Who can use the service:

  • Individual Farmers.
  • Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Cooperatives.
  • Agricultural Traders and Merchants.

What goods are eligible:

  • Eligible for 50% Subsidy: A wide list of notified fruits (mango, banana, apple, pineapple, citrus, etc.) and vegetables (tomato, onion, potato, garlic, peas, etc.).
  • Allowed on Train (But check subsidy status): Dairy products, fish, meat, and flowers.

Documents Required

Booking space on a Kisan Rail is similar to standard railway parcel booking. You need:

  • Valid ID Proof: Aadhaar Card or Voter ID of the consignor.
  • Consignment Details: Type of produce, total weight, and specific temperature/handling requirements.
  • FPO/Cooperative Documents: If booking collectively as an organization, relevant registration proofs may be requested.

How to Apply / Book Space

Kisan Rail operates as a special parcel service, not a passenger train, so you don't book a "ticket" in the traditional sense.

  1. Identify the Route: Check the Indian Railway Parcel portal or contact your local railway station to see if a Kisan Rail circuit is active in your region. Routes are demand-driven (e.g., orange season in Nagpur, onion season in Nashik).
  2. Visit the Parcel Office: Go to the Chief Parcel Supervisor (CPS) office at your nearest major railway station.
  3. Submit Details: Provide your ID and the details of your perishable goods.
  4. Pay Subsidized Freight: The railway staff will weigh the goods, apply the 50% Operation Greens subsidy automatically, and charge you the remaining freight cost.
  5. Get Railway Receipt (RR): You will be issued an RR number, which serves as your booking confirmation and tracking ID.

Latest Updates (2026)

  • Demand-Based Routing: The Railways are increasingly operating Kisan Rails purely on seasonal market demand. New circuits connecting Himachal Pradesh (apples) and Andhra Pradesh (mangoes/bananas) to Delhi and Guwahati are frequently added.
  • Perishable Cargo Centres (PCCs): The government is actively expanding PCCs at major railway stations. These act as cold-storage holding areas to keep produce fresh before it is loaded onto the train.
  • Streamlined Subsidy: The coordination between the Ministry of Railways and MoFPI has been tightened to ensure the 50% freight subsidy remains instantly applicable without bureaucratic delays.
